DETROIT (Tell Us Det) – The 2012 Hunger Free Summer Campaign launched early Thursday morning at Gleaners Community Food Bank on Detroit’s eastside with more than 40 CEO’s executives and business leaders busy filling hundreds of backpacks with nutritious food and snacks.

“When school lets out, hunger sets in” says Sandy Pierce, President of Charter One Bank, program underwriter of the Hunger Free Summer Campaign and match donor sponsor.

To enjoy a healthy summer vacation, the campaign plans to provide two million meals to more than 300,000 children in southeastern Michigan. Children often go hungry during the summer when they stop receiving free or reduced cost meals at school.

Gleaners President Dwayne Ralph said in southeastern Michigan alone, one in five families are food insecure; he explained this means being at risk of going hungry or missing one or more meals. Of the food Gleaners delivers, Ralph says 40% goes to children.

The 10 week Hunger Free Summer begins June 15th with the delivery of backpacks and other foods to over 160 feeding programs across southeast Michigan.

“We are sending a message that is simply not acceptable to have children go hungry in our community” said Pierce who was joined in a press conference by corporate donors who have pledged to match funds raised dollar-for-dollar.

Funding the summer program will cost some $600,000 dollars; every dollar raised provides six meals for children who are at risk of hunger and malnutrition while school is out. Joining Charter One Foundation in contributing matching funds are Ford Motor Company Fund, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Epoch Restaurant Group, American Specialty Oil Company and the Joshua (Jim) and Eunice Stone Foundation.

Gleaners Community Food Bank has been feeding the hungry for the past 35 years; this is the second year for Hunger Free Summer initiative that runs through mid-September, 2012. For more information or to make donations, visit http://www.hungerfreesummer.org.
